Historic vehicle licensing

We hold Registers of Motor Vehicle Licences that were issued by Cheshire County Council (1903-1974), Chester City Council (1903-1974) and Warrington Borough Council (1922-1974). These cover registrations with the prefixes ED, FM, LG, M, MA, MB and TU. The registers issued by Birkenhead and Wallasey do not survive.

We can supply copies of the documentation found in each register. There is a copying charge and an additional charge for us to certify it. If the copies are needed to obtain original vehicle registration numbers from the DVLA, they usually need to be certified in order for them to be accepted.

Please note that the DVLA now require the chassis number of the vehicle to be shown on the document and this is not always recorded in the registers. If you think you would like certified copies but would like us to check the register entries before you place your order, you can order a Short Search. This fee is waived if you proceed with an order for certified copies.

The easiest way of ordering copies is via our online shop.  Please select ‘order copies’, read and accept the terms and conditions, then choose ‘vehicle licensing copies’ and complete the form.
